Newsgaggle History

Where did the name NewsGaggle come from?

In the news industry, a gaggle is an informal meeting often held on a daily basis by press offices at federal agencies.

The tradition started at the White House when the White House Press Secretary would meet before the day began with the Press Secretary discussing the day’s agenda with members of the White House press corp.  The meeting was informal, off the record and not quotable.   But those meetings, referred to as morning gaggle, also gave everyone a heads’ up on what’s really going on.
